Distribution :
We differentiate three groups according to their breeding-place:

"Halichoerus grypus atlanticus" lives in the North East of Atlantic Ocean (Spit Bergen, South Iceland, Kola peninsula, Great Britain, South Ireland)

"Halichoerus grypus" lives in the North West of Atlantic Ocean (South Greenland, Massachusetts, Labrador).

"Halichoerus grypus balticus" lives in the Baltic Sea, New Jersey, South Portugal, North Labrador.

Whole Population: 120 000 to 135 000 individuals
Males: Length: around 90 inches; Weight: around 550 pounds; Longevity: 30 years;
Females: Length: around 78 inches; Weight: around 397 pounds; Longevity: 45 years.

Births happen on earth or on ice. The young are suckled during two to three weeks. From September to December in the North East of Atlantic Ocean, In February-March in the Baltic Sea, in January-February in the North West of Atlantic Ocean.
Food: Migrating fishes, pelagic and benthic fauna, some invertebrates.

They live in North Atlantic: France, Great Britain, Ireland, Spitzbergen, Iceland… San Francisco…etc


Whole Population: 300 000 to 400 000 individuals
Males: Length: around 6 feet 3 inches; Weight: around 330 pounds; Longevity: 25 years;
Females: Length: around 5 feet 7 inches; Weight: around 220 pounds; Longevity: 30 years.


Births happen on the earth.
Some groups live in soft water (Canada).
Food: Migrating fishes, pelagic and benthic fauna, some invertebrates.
